The Bay Leaf Tree is an attractive tree with dark green leaves that can be picked and used in cooking to impart a lovey flavour. It has a long history of cultivation and has been used by many cultures.

The Bay Leaf tree grows well in South East QLD and in coastal areas. It’s pot-friendly and makes an attractive and useful plant suited to grow in smaller spaces like verandahs and courtyards along with gardens.

If grown in the ground and left unpruned it can ultimately reach 5-7metres high. Most people however, prefer to keep the trees to 1-2metres high which can be done comfortably with occasional pruning. The Bay Leaf tree may produce sucker shoots beside the main trunk and these can be removed.

When it comes to cooking, Bay leaves are much loved and used in many recipes. They impart a unique fragrant herbal flavour and can be used on their own or as part of a combination of herbs known as bouquet garni.

Whilst they can be used when picked fresh from the tree they tend to have a more rounded flavour if used after drying instead. They act to flavour the dish and rather than eating the leaves you remove them prior to serving.
